Habitus. Podetia 2 - 5 cm, tall, surface raspy, green to brown-green. Apices often with a small cup with denticulated border. Surface of podetia covered with many small squamules. Apothecia and pyknidia at the apices, brown. No soredia. There are two varieties with similar morphology but different chemistry:
  • C. squamosa var. squamosa with squamatic und barbatic acids; P-, K-, C-, KC-
  • C. squamosa var. subsquamosa with thamnolic und barbatic acids; P+ orange, K+ yelloworange
